TailReport.com Sets Out to Chart the Long Tail of Blogging

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) March 11, 2008 -- Tail Report (http://www.tailreport.com) has launched with the goal to map out how money is made in the blogosphere. Tail Report works by asking users to anonymously submit information about their site's traffic, rank and monthly revenue. In return, the user receives a custom report detailing what other websites are making and how their revenue compares based a number of factors, such as traffic, rank, number of RSS subscribers, age, number of employees, content, and ad networks.

The report details how these factors affect the rise and fall of ad revenue. With a report, a blogger may, for example, discover that they are using ad networks that perform poorly in their niche. Users will be able to find which networks perform the best with the same type of site. Additionally, the report may show another blogger that in order to make twice as much money, they'll need 10 times the amount of traffic.

Each completed survey is added to a global database of anonymous website revenue information. By analyzing the cumulative data, these surveys give a detailed look at how money in the blogosphere is spread out and allow bloggers to dig deep into trends.

Roughly, it is assumed that the top 20% of blogs make 80% of all of the revenue. In the blogosphere, this distribution is referred to as "The Long Tail". But all assumptions aside, without hard data, nobody really knows what the tail actually looks like.

"What's exciting is that when the data from these surveys is combined, we can plot a realistic graph to represent the Long Tail," says Tail Report's founder and developer, Nate Weiner. "When we know what the shape of the Tail is, we can find answers to some long unanswered questions."

Weiner believes that with this information, bloggers will be able to accurately predict how much money is in the blogosphere and can answer questions like: 'How much traffic is roughly needed to make a full-time living from blogging?' and 'What ad networks offer the best performance for specific niches and types of content?'

"These are questions that I've seen being asked by a lot of bloggers, including myself." Weiner states. "Salary comparison websites have been doing this sort of thing for people's salaries for years. They collect data about a person's job and experience and then spit out how much they should be making and what sort of factors correlate to higher salaries. Tail Report simply brings the same type of usefulness to blogging ad revenue."

Tail Report is calling on bloggers to help expand its database, which will improve the accuracy of the data and help answer the blogosphere's biggest questions. Detailed, real-time reports will be available in the second quarter of 2008.

Tail Report is a free service that enhances the blogging community by sharing data with its users that will help them maximize their website's revenue potential. For additional information on Tail Report (or a sample report and demo video), visit http://www.tailreport.com.

What is a blog? The term was coined in 1999, and today Webster?s dictionary defines a blog as a ?diary; a personal chronological log of thoughts published on a Web page.? More importantly, it says that blogs are ?typically updated daily? and that ?blogs often reflect the personality of the author.? But think seriously about frequent blogging. According to Technorati - an internet search engine focused on the world of blogs - only 11% of all blogs update weekly or more. What matters more and more is what you write not how often you write ? quality not quantity or frequency.
